About second-hand Weed burners

Weed burners destroy the top parts of plants and weeds. Full field weed burners can be used to combat weeds before the crops grow. The advantage of burning weeds is that very small weeds are also effected. It is important that the plants are dry and that the seed bed is even and not too rough for the weed burner to work properly.

Burning weeds before growth

Burning before growth works on the same principle as blind harrowing. Small areas of soil, the so-called germination windows, can be covered by foil or a pane of glass to determine the right time for burning. The soil temperature under the pane of glass is higher, resulting in the crop seeds germinating several days earlier than those in the soil that is not covered. The moment for burning weeds is easy to determine in this way. This must be checked from the fifth day during hot, damp weather, depending on the crop. It is the right time to burn the field when the first plants are visible in the germination window. Various places must be checked because the germination of arable crops can be irregular. Only burn if there are actually weeds present.

Adjustment of the weed burner by the ‘fingerprint test’

The finger print test is the most important aid to adjusting the weed burner when working speed, gas pressure and the distance of the burner are involved. A fingerprint must be visible on the leaf when the treated, still green weed leaf is pinched between the fingers, otherwise the process has been insufficient. The machine must be moved slower or the gas pressure be increased if a fingerprint cannot be seen. The machine can be moved quicker when the leaves are scorched and brown or if the plants are smoking after burning. The speed when burning is 3 – 6 km per hour. At higher speeds the working is even effective on very small weeds.
