About second-hand Leek washing and peeling machines

Leek washing machines are used to clean leeks and cut them to the desired length. The washing method and other options can vary from one leek washing machine to another.

Principle of the leek washing line

The leeks are placed in the input conveyor manually. After this, the roots and the leaves at the top are cut to the desired length. The leeks are then sprinkled with water. Depending on the model of leek washer used, rotating rubber peeling rollers could remove sand and soil from the leeks. The leeks are kept in place in the leek washer by rubber clamping belts that prevent the leeks from moving about too much. If necessary, the outer leaves are removed manually after washing for an optimally clean result.

Dry leek cleaning line

Some leek growers consciously choose a leek washer in which the leeks are cleaned manually prior to washing because when you use a combination leek washer and peeler the outer leaves often still have to be removed manually. It is more pleasant for workers to remove the outer leaves when the leeks are still dry as opposed to when they are cold and wet. After manual cleaning, the leeks are put through a washing line.

Because leek washers use water, they are made from stainless steel. The stainless steel of a used leek washer may exhibit signs of spotting or discolouration after some time due to the use of mineral water. The various moving parts of a leek washer, such as conveyor belts, clamping belts, knives and peelers, are usually powered by a hydraulic motor.
