About second-hand Flow pack machines
A flow pack machine, also known as a flowpacker or flowwrapper, is an advanced packaging machine that allows you to quickly package perishable products such as fruit, vegetables, cold cuts, and dairy, as well as non-food products. The process of a flow pack machine is relatively simple and results in a well-sealed package that extends the shelf life of the packaged products. As a result, flow pack machines are widely used worldwide and are characterized by packaging from a flat roll of film.
One of the main advantages of a flow pack machine is its very high capacity at relatively low costs per packaged product. Depending on the type of sealing system of the flowpacker, a capacity of up to hundreds of products per minute can be achieved.
Second-Hand Flow Pack Machines
Within the world of packaging machines, flow pack machines have rapidly gained popularity. These machines are essential for efficiently and effectively packaging a variety of products, ranging from food to pharmaceutical products. Due to this popularity, Duijndam Machines always has a large stock of used flow packers available. All second-hand flow pack machines have been thoroughly inspected before being purchased to guarantee the quality of our machines.
In a time where efficiency, sustainability, and cost savings are essential, second-hand flow pack machines are an attractive choice for companies looking for a packaging solution.
Vertical Flow Packers
A commonly used variant of the flowpacker is the vertical flow pack machine. Vertical flow wrap machines are ideal for packaging products that are irregular in shape. These products fall into the packaging from above, making it easy to package frozen vegetables, grated cheese, loose candies, or powders.
Operation of a Vertical Flow Pack Machine
A vertical flow packer typically operates with a flat roll of plastic film, which may have branding printed on the inside or outside. The film is guided to the back of a cylindrical tube, also known as the forming tube. As the center of the film reaches this tube, the outer edges are folded into flaps that wrap around the conical forming tube. The film is then pulled down along the outside of the tube while a vertical heat-sealing bar presses the edges together and seals them with heat.
The bag formation process begins when a horizontal sealing bar presses the film at the bottom of the tube, bonding the layers and cutting off any excess film. Some machines have this sealing bar positioned at a fixed height, resulting in an intermittent sealing process. Faster systems have a sealing bar that moves along with the bag during sealing, creating a continuous process.
The bag is then filled, and once the pre-set gross weight is reached, the bag is sealed on the short side using a horizontal sealer. The product is then ready for further processing and shipping.
Horizontal Flow Pack Machines
The counterpart to the vertical flowpacker is the horizontal flow wrapper. As the name suggests, a horizontal flow pack machine wraps plastic film around the product and seals it along the horizontal (long) side. The product is fed into the machine via a flat, horizontal conveyor belt.
Horizontal flow pack machines are used to package loose solid products such as individual pieces of fruit and vegetables or tray-packaged products.
Operation of a Horizontal Flow Packer
A conveyor belt transports the product to the horizontal flowpacker. Here, the film is unrolled and wrapped around the product in a tubular shape using a forming shoulder. A heat seal then seals the ends of the package together and trims it to size.
The product may then be automatically checked and inspected before being ready for further processing.
The main reasons why the packaging industry chooses horizontal flow packers are their versatility, high-quality packaging, and high processing speed. Additionally, this packaging method allows products to be preserved for longer through gas injection.
Popular Flow Wrapper Brands
At Duijndam Machines, we sell many second-hand flow packers from various brands. Here are some of the most popular brands:
Ulma Flow Pack Machines
One of the largest brands in the packaging sector is Ulma. Their packaging machines are widely used for packaging various products, from fresh produce to ready-made meals. Ulma's packaging machines are highly popular due to their dedication to innovation and improvement.
At ULMA Packaging, they strive not only to provide the best solutions for their customers but also to do so in the best possible way. That is why Ulma places great importance on their mission, vision, and values.
Sorma Flow Packers
Another well-known player in the packaging industry is Sorma. Sorma specializes in the entire processing of fresh products, from input and sorting to packaging and tracking. At Duijndam Machines, we sell many flow pack machines from this Italian brand.
Affeldt Vertical Flow Wrappers
Affeldt is a German manufacturer specializing in high-quality weighing and packaging machines. They provide packaging lines for a wide range of food products, including vegetables, fruit, bakery products, confectionery, and frozen products. Additionally, Affeldt machines are suitable for packaging non-food items. Our inventory mainly includes Affeldt's vertical flow packers.
Fresh Produce Packaging Machines
Potatoes, vegetables, and fruit (AGF) are often delivered to consumers in packaging. Due to the perishability of these products, especially when pre-cut, packaging is crucial in the fresh produce sector. Used flow pack machines are highly suitable as packaging machines for fresh produce. With their relatively simple packaging method, flow pack machines are a fast and efficient way to keep fresh products well-preserved.
Besides packaging machines, Duijndam Machines also sells many other food processing machines, such as conveyor belts and washing machines, which you can find here.
Options for Used Flow Pack Machines
In addition to the standard functionalities of the different flow pack machines, as described in our used flow packers, it is also possible to add functionalities to existing machines. For example, a flow pack machine can be adapted to process products in a protective atmosphere or resealable packaging. Additionally, a shrink tunnel can be added to or placed behind the flowpacker.
Above, you will find an overview of the used flow packers from Ulma, Record, Ilpak, and RGD that Duijndam Machines currently has for sale. Feel free to inquire about the possibilities of the different used flow pack machines.

Frequently asked questions about Flowpackmachine
What is a flow pack machine?
A flow pack machine, also known as a flowpacker or flowwrapper, is a type of packaging machine that wraps products in a plastic film to keep them well protected. Flow packing is commonly used for a wide range of food products such as (cut) vegetables, fruit, cookies, and cold cuts.
How does a flow packer work?
The exact working mechanism depends on the type of flow packer, but the basic principle is similar for all machines. The machine forms a bag or tube from a roll of film, into which the product is placed. The packaging is then sealed at the front and back by a sealing bar, which also cuts the film. This entire process happens in one continuous motion or "flow" — hence the name flowpacker.
What are well-known brands of flow pack machines?
There are various manufacturers of flow pack machines on the market. Some well-known European brands for fruit and vegetable packaging include Ulma, Fuji, Ilapak, Record, Sorma, RGD Mape, and Jasa.
What is the difference between a vertical and a horizontal flow packer?
The main difference lies in how the product is fed into the machine:
- In a vertical flow packer, the product drops into the packaging from above.
- In a horizontal flow packer, the product is fed horizontally via a conveyor belt or chain system.
Because of this difference, vertical flow packers are more suitable for loose products such as cut vegetables, spinach, potatoes, or candy.
Horizontal flow packers, on the other hand, are better suited for larger items packed individually or in small quantities — such as fennel, aubergine, or spring onions — or for products packed on trays, such as tomatoes, pears, and avocados.
What types of products are suitable for flow pack machines?
Flow pack machines are suitable for a wide variety of products, ranging from vegetables, meat, and fish to non-food items. Whether a flow packer is suitable for your specific product depends on various factors. Our advisers or the manufacturer can help you determine the best solution.
Is flow pack packaging sustainable?
Originally, flow pack machines use plastic film for packaging. However, due to increasing concerns about single-use plastics, manufacturers are developing more sustainable alternatives — such as plastic-free packaging made from FSC-certified cellulose. Several companies are working on innovative, eco-friendly packaging solutions, and this development continues to evolve rapidly.
