About second-hand Drum / barrel washing machines for vegetables

When the harvest comes off the field, it must first be further processed before it is ready for sale. After harvesting, the vegetables are still dirty from the soil and need to be cleared of stones and other debris. For potatoes and tubers, washing is often done using drum washers, also known as washing drums.

Drum washers have been successfully used in bulb cultivation for years but are also highly suitable for washing potatoes and tubers. While the operation of drum washers is simple, they are highly effective. In addition, crops such as beets, carrots, and parsnips can also be cleaned thoroughly using this type of washer.

On this page, you’ll find all the drum washers we currently have in stock. On the page of a specific drum washer, you’ll find a detailed description, including photos and sometimes videos. Do you still have questions about one of our drum washers despite the information provided? Feel free to contact us, and one of our specialists will be happy to assist you!

How Does a Drum Washer Work?

Drum washers operate in a simple yet very effective way. Using a drum washer, potatoes and tubers essentially wash themselves. Through a feed chute, the vegetables enter a space comparable to a cement mixer, half-filled with water. As the drum rotates, the crops rub against each other and are cleaned by the water. The dirty water exits the drum through perforations in the drum wall.

Many drum washers have adjustable drum speeds, so they can be optimally set for each crop. The amount of washing water can also be adjusted, and reusing water—after purification—is possible.

No Damage During Washing

Drum washers are designed to keep the crop intact during the washing process. The drum rotates gently, preventing the tubers or potatoes from rubbing too harshly against each other. Additionally, as the drum rotates, the crops are moved from high to low, but since the drum is half-filled with water, a catch basin is formed, allowing the produce to land softly. This way, potatoes, tubers, beets, carrots, or parsnips come out not only clean but also in excellent condition.

Drum Washer for Potatoes

As mentioned, drum washers are mainly used for washing potatoes. A drum washer for potatoes thoroughly cleans the product using a rotating drum combined with spray and/or immersion water. As the potatoes slowly rotate, soil, clay, and organic waste are effectively loosened and removed via perforated drum sections or a sieve bottom. Thanks to continuous water circulation, water usage is limited, making the machine both efficient and sustainable—making it the perfect potato washer.

Looking for a machine to wash your potatoes that minimizes damage and thoroughly removes dirt? Then a drum washer is a reliable choice.

Used Drum Washer

As mentioned earlier, drum washers are simple yet effective. This simplicity makes them particularly suitable for second-hand purchase. Since there are no particularly complex technologies involved, the risk of high repair costs in case of a defect is limited.

Drum washers typically have a long service life. Used drum washers are significantly cheaper to purchase than new ones, which greatly shortens the payback period—making them especially attractive for small-scale growers or those who frequently switch crops. Spiral Washer

In addition to drum washers, there is another type of washer that may look and operate similarly but is fundamentally different: the spiral washer. Whereas a drum washer uses a rotating drum to move the produce, a spiral washer uses a rotating spiral.

While drum washers are suitable for more robust crops like potatoes and tubers, spiral washers can also be used for more delicate vegetables, including lettuce and cut vegetables.
