About second-hand machines for Peppers

Sweet peppers and hot peppers are, botanically speaking, the same plant: the capsicum. The various names sometimes lead to confusion: sweet pepper, pointy sweet pepper, hot pepper, bell pepper, chilli pepper or Hungarian wax pepper. Because there are so many varieties, there are variations in flavour, name and shape. The shape and the cultivation method used will also determined which parts of growing, grading and packaging peppers can or cannot be performed automatically.

Electric pipe-rail trolleys and harvesting carts for peppers

The heating pipes of a greenhouse can be used as the rails for the pipe-rail trolleys. Depending on how high the crop grows, electric pipe-rail trolleys are used to care for the plants and harvest the peppers. When selecting a pipe-rail trolley the distance between the wheels must be equal to the distance between the pipe-rail pipes.

Harvesting bins for peppers

When harvesting peppers, they are transferred to harvesting bins with a movable floor. Because the bottom of the harvesting bin gradually lowers as the bin is filled, its contents will always remain at the top. This means that the peppers will always be laid at the top of the bin, thus preventing damage from falling or throwing: an improvement in harvesting performance.

If the harvesting bin cannot be placed on the electric pipe-rail trolley, the difference in height is bridged by a picking gutter with a fall breaker. The pepper bins are then carefully unloaded in the grading and packaging hall with the aid of sensors.

Grading machines

Peppers are sorted according to weight (sometimes in combination with size) using a cup grading machine. Hungarian and pointy peppers cannot be graded on the same machine because of their shape and size. Cucumber grading machines can be used to grade these peppers, for example.

There are substantial variations in grading machines. Some machines automatically fill boxes of peppers by weight and some have an output line that sends filled boxes to a palletiser. Linking these machines can create a highly efficient system that requires hardly any manual labour.

Cleaning and washing machines for peppers

Peppers are washed by brush machines with soft brushes. Pepper washing machines can be integrated into a grading line, after which the sweet peppers are transported to a special dryer.

Packaging machines for peppers

Packaging is more than the convenient bundling of peppers that ensures a longer shelf life. Nowadays, packaging is also an integral part of marketing and communication. Consumers want more information about a product, for example, such as content and country of origin. Packaging also makes it easier for retailers to communicate the distinguishing characteristics of their products. More and more farms have therefore started using pepper packaging machines.

Flowpack machines, for example, are used to package peppers individually or by threes (the well-known sweet pepper ‘traffic light’). When multiple peppers are put in the same packaging this packaging must have a minimum total weight. They must, in this case, be weighed as accurately as possible. This can be done using a multihead weigher for peppers.
